Is there a turntable? Then you’ll probably need a phono stage (also known as a phono stage) that amplifies your player’s audio output to make it compatible with today’s line-level amplifiers. At the same time, it adds normalized alignment.

So why do you need it? Your stereo amplifier or turntable is probably not working, in which case you won’t be able to play records without this important component. Or maybe you just want to improve its sound compared to the amplifier or built-in phono stage in some players.
Like many other product categories, turntables cover all price ranges. But if you’re looking to save money or hit the jackpot, we’ve got the phono stage for you. Each player scene on this list has been rigorously tested by What Hi-Fi? In our dedicated listening room so you can trust our buying advice. We have used our review catalog over the years to select the best products currently available so you can be sure you are getting the best value for your money.
If you’re looking for a new turntable, check out our selection of the best turntables for every budget. When your new vinyl is ready, here are some tips to help you get the best sound from your turntable.
Why You Can Trust What Hi-Fi? Our team of experts vet products in dedicated testing labs to help you make the best choice for your budget. Learn more about how we test.
Which phono stage you need depends entirely on your existing vinyl system and your budget.
If you have an inexpensive turntable, an affordable phono stage that is easy to use and compatible with your (most likely) moving magnet (MM) cartridges is the only option you need to consider. If you are a Hi-Fi enthusiast with an advanced turntable and want to fine-tune your system and swap out various MM and MC cartridges like a mad scientist trying to get the best sound, you will need one. The phono stage has many flexible cartridge loadings and gain controls to suit your high-end system, plus more inputs.
Phono stages usually only have one set of inputs (you usually only plug in a turntable, after all), and even those in the entry-to-mid price range now increasingly allow you to switch between MM and MC cartridges – though note that many people still specialize in only one genre. Higher-end phono stages tend to be larger (both a separate power supply and better components take up space), while budget options take up less space. Compatibility is more important than design, although it’s not hard to find a quality case.
Ultimately which cartridge you choose will depend on what works best with the player and the cartridge you already have, so make sure you have your player’s specs handy. The same is true if you want to upgrade your current setup, though it’s always worth checking out the next model for the future.
Of course, sound quality is the ultimate deciding factor: if possible, we recommend demonstrating your new phono stage using your existing turntable and system to ensure you get the best possible sound quality from vinyl playback.
It doesn’t have the liveliest title, but the Moon 110LP v2 does a great job of boosting the performance of vinyl. The neat aluminum housing is made to Moon’s high standards and is switchable, meaning it can work with both moving coil and moving magnet.
This phono stage will be very quiet and silent if you keep it away from other products and mains powered cords. The features are basic, but it’s clear that Moon has focused on the most important thing – sound quality.
As a result, the Moon 110LP v2 is one of the best phono stages in its class at this price point. It is specially adapted for the moving magnetic cartridge, producing a smooth, smooth and refined sound with a pleasant punch. Even when the music gets harsh, the stereo image is maintained and remains stable. It reproduces music in a subtle way that is rewarding and easy to listen to for long periods of time.
With a moving coil cartridge, large-scale dynamics are somewhat muffled and bass is softer, but you’ll have to spend half the money again to get significantly better cartridge performance.
If you’re looking for a quality turntable at an affordable price, this award-winning little box is definitely worth a listen.
Well, this is, of course, an outside observer. With its offset volume control, minimal styling and mirrored labels on the back that are easy to read even when looking through the top of the unit, it’s clear that the Cambridge Audio Duo phono stage has been given a lot of thought. No less attention is paid to sound quality.
The presentation is really good, spacious and coherent, and the sound is dynamic and timely. It doesn’t quite match the Rega Fono MM MK3 in terms of power, but it has its own MC and MM cartridges.
The bonus here is the presence of a built-in headphone amplifier with a 6.3mm headphone jack, which is a bit unusual but quite welcome on a phono stage of this caliber. This is a great way to update your vinyl system or add some modern style.
Smooth, rich sound combined with a headphone amplifier make this stylish box definitely worth a look.
The Vertere already had a great phono stage, but this updated version was able to provide a significant performance boost thanks to the thorough cleaning and polishing of the PCB and power supply. The neat box remains the same, the only addition to the design is the orange power LED.
The new Phono-1 MkII L is a solid performer with a range of useful features and customization options to help you get the most out of any cartridge. Its detailed musical presentation makes listening a pleasure.
We love the scale of Vertere’s performance and the way he conveys the seismic dynamics of the record with such enthusiasm. As with the previous generation (also award-winning), our main takeaway from listening to this player is that it makes listening to music fun, and under the right circumstances, fun. Other than that, we have nothing to demand from Hi-Fi.
If you have an older version of the Phono-1, don’t worry about trading in for this newer version. For new buyers, feel free to pick this version as it’s a clear upgrade and well worth the price hike (now £1350 / $1895 / AU$2700). Considering the source and the right talent system, this is still one of the best turntable scenes we’ve heard at this price point.
The Rega Fono MM MK2 is one of the best phono stages on the market, so to say that expectations are high for its successor would be an understatement. Fortunately, he met them, and then some. The basic design of the MM MK3 has been redesigned down to the inch, making it sleeker while maintaining the simplicity of its predecessor.
The MK3′s award-winning sound now features a wider dynamic range, stronger bass and greater clarity, making an already great sound even better. An expansive soundstage, masterful timing and dynamics management (not surprising given the Rega’s enviable track record with amps and turntables), and reduced noise further enhance performance.
Rega recommends using only the included PS1 mains plug with the phono preamp – a replacement will cost you approximately £20. One of the best sounding phono stages.
NOTE. There is a new version of this MK5 phono stage in 2022 and we will go through the verification process soon.
The Gram Amp 2 is another old-fashioned but still solid product that is still holding its own nearly a decade after its debut. You’ll see why – simplicity is the name of the game here, in a very age-appropriate approach. This is a moving magnet phono stage with one set of inputs, one output and no bells and whistles.
The sound quality is first class: very detailed, especially the high frequencies are impressive. It’s hard to imagine a more detailed demo from a phono stage for that kind of money. There are competitors with a similarly expansive soundstage, but they may not illuminate every instrument as much. Details are what make it stand out, but the Gram Amp 2 is also great in terms of dynamics and timing – although perhaps not as much as the Rega.
There is also an optional PSU1 Linear Audio Upgrade: a 24VDC unit that balances out voltage fluctuations and noise on the home network. It will cost you £180 – the same as the Amp 2 itself – but well worth it if you want to beef up this already excellent budget model with extra power and bass dynamics.
The iFi Zen Phono is the popular entry-level version of a decent phono stage that will keep your recordings clear. In fact, you’ll be hard-pressed to find something that handles sharpness better at this price point.
As you would expect from a company with a solid reputation in the field, the ifi Zen phono stage is well made. It works with moving magnet boxes but can also work with moving coils. It is also worth noting that the symmetrical design reduces noise and crosstalk, which is rare in this market segment.
The main attraction here is the sound. It’s clean, but never enters clinical territory. If the goal of the game is to play every note, perhaps with a little polish, Zen Phono is the clear winner. The balance is just right too.
This product doesn’t offer the same level of enthusiasm and dynamism as some of the options listed above, but we can’t help but be stunned by its authentic sonic character. So it’s worth listening to.
Phono stages tend to be fairly ordinary black boxes, with the exception of the sleek Cambridge Audio Duo above. Musical Fidelity takes a different approach: this phono stage has a beautiful design, a well-crafted front panel, and easy-to-use controls.
Instead of using a series of DIP switches (as many competitors do), the MX-VYNL has a rather elegant control dial to control switching between moving coil and moving magnet inputs and their different load requirements.
In addition to the standard unbalanced phono input (used by most recording devices), it also accepts balanced signals via 5-pin mini XLR connectors.
Luckily, convenience is far from the MX-VYNL’s only advantage – the sound is remarkably transparent and detailed, making it easy to pick up low-level instrumentation and vocal textures. We love the way he handles vocals. Its fluidity makes competitors seem mechanical by comparison, although it may not have the full cohesion of the similarly priced Rega Aria. But when it comes to biting and attacking, it’s not exactly a deterrent.
It’s the perfect balance of attitude and sophistication. If the rest of your system is up to par, the MX-VYNL is worth the investment.
As a brand, Rega tends to focus on the more affordable Hi-Fi market, but when it decides to go big, the results are often impressive, as evidenced by the high-end Aura turntable (£3,999 / $5,995 when tested). It’s not a Swiss army knife device solely focused on getting the most out of a moving coil cartridge – pretty decent for this price point. Those with moving magnets will have to look elsewhere.
The build quality is impeccable, and once you optimize the cartridge with the right electrical load, you’ll find that the Aura can make your turntable sing – a sound full of excitement and power. It’s rare to find such interesting performers.
Aura is characterized by purity, crispness and clarity, but what’s really impressive is how it resolves complex arrangements and brings them together in such an organized musical way. Rhythm-driven and dynamic expression are usually Rega’s strengths, and here it excels.
The sparkling top makes the Aura sound very direct, which only draws us into the music. It’s a bold, edgy presentation that makes up for what it loses in spectacle in terms of image depth, refinement, or sheer spaciousness that you get from competitors like the more laid-back Luxman EQ-500.
Rega Aura doesn’t come cheap and demands the best of your co-op kit and source material. But in a system with the right talent, it’s worth all the money and more.
The Cyrus Audio brand is built on a long tradition of excellence in CD players and amplifiers. Vinyl playback has never been a major part of its output, and we found past phono stages to be more good than great. The Cyrus Phono Signature/PSX-R2 combo (originally £1,900 when tested, now £2,290) changes that.
This premium phono stage allows users to fine-tune cartridge matching from the comfort of their favorite listening position, thanks to a convenient (albeit badly labeled) remote control – something we’ve never experienced before. Gain, resistors and capacitors also have wide adjustment ranges.
The sound quality is very gifted, full of texture and understanding. It’s a very clean and crisp sound with plenty of weight and low end content that fits well with Cyrus’ traditional values of precision and speed.
The Phono Signature sound itself is refined and smooth, punchy when needed, but the addition of the upgraded PSX-R2 power supply takes the sound quality to a whole new level. The scale is bigger, the bass becomes more authoritative, and the exact placement of the players and instruments in the beautifully layered soundstage is clear at a glance. Insightful expressions squeeze every last drop of emotion out of the recording.
If you already have the right player and really want to hear how good it is, this Cyrus combo is a must.
